Have decided to do an A Level
Since I don't have any!
Part time, fast track, have the choice of History, English Lit, Sociology or Law. I was going to Sociology at first because I am very into current affairs/politics/culture etc, but then I didn't want to end up with a bunch of cliche teenage sociology students who are thick, have no clue about the world.. I was also thinking sociology would be full of easy girls until I realised they would all probably think they are "deep" and "interesting" people. So I decided to go for law.. But I have enough time to change.. so has anyone got experience of A Level sociology, and if so, was it as bad as I expect it to be?

Yes, but I still like to entertain myself with the thought that I COULD sleep with attractive ladies, if I wanted (not that I ever have/would!!!)
lol, don't ask Nah but seriously I just enjoy female company, I don't get a lot these days, what with working nights with a male team lol.

Choosing whether or not to take a certain A level is one thing, but basing it on the people who you may or may not encounter whilst studying it is silly.
I did that before going to college, only to realise that there's a wicked mix of girls in my group and they're not all blonde, with false nails and an orange tan. I put off studying at college for a whole year because of that, and looking back at it, it was a really stupid thing to let it get to me. Study sociology because you find it interesting, not because of who will or won't be in your study group. |

Right, but I think it might not be interesting, and might be a load of shit - which is what I am trying to ascertain.
Also, I am studying for fun, so being stuck in a room full of people that annoy me, wouldn't really be "fun", especially since I am paying a lot, for the privaledge!

It's £146 a year where I am, as it's fast track I only have to pay for 1 year, thank god.
I know it might not sound like a lot to some people, but it's not exactly pennies is it. Especially when I am trying to get a new car, hehe!

I did A-Level English Lit and History and they were both really, really interesting and challenging. I did a lot of sociology modules at university as well as sociology modules through the Open University and it isn't actually as wishy washy as it's reputation would suggest. People who study it don't think they're "deep" and it isn't a cop out subject. It's very broad and it can challenge your beliefs quite a lot.

I studied sociology at a level and I loved it. It really makes you think about the world around you and it was not what I was expecting.

Well at the moment I'm studying English Lit, Law and History, so I might be a little helpful
![]() I LOVE History. I've always found it interesting and studying topics I haven't before (eg. American Civil War) really rings my bell. I also LOVE Law. I find it extremely fun - problem solving and case studies can be really interesting. English Lit... Well I'm not enjoying it all that much. I'm a fan of modern literature and everything my class is looking at is traditional. Plus, I don't like poetry. I'm thinking about swapping it for Economics, but I'm not sure. I've heard Sociology is a lot of work - I've seen the textbooks and they're huge. |

However, I hugely enjoyed that year. Infact, I enjoyed it so much that in one of my module exams at AS Level, I managed to score full marks. 90 out of 90. I've never achieved anything like that before or since then, so I feel proud!

i've just started sociology and i'm enjoying it so far. We have a tiny class, its nearly all girls but theres 2 guys aswell.
English lit is good too but its alot of work. It depends on your teacher. I've got 2 wicked teachers so im loving it, whereas another friend of mine hates it cause her teachers are horrible. I also did history GCSE and i probably would have gone for A level if i'd enjoyed it more. I didn't like my teacher and it made it all very dull. Plus the topics he chose were boring. I was told its actually one of the hardest out of all the GCSE subjects so at A level it would be even harder. It's good if the stuff you do is interesting, have a see what kind of stuff you'd be covering. History always looks good. |

You should do the one that you find most interesting, if you're not interested in the subject and just doing it to get an A-level you won't be motivated.
Law can be pretty dull so if you have an interest in history, sociology, politics or English I'd say they're a better idea. Although I know some people are interested in Law from what I've seen the A-level is rather dull. Good luck anyway. (Generally also worth considering, 'traditional' A-level subjects like History and English are preferred by some to 'new' A-levels like Law and Sociology). |
