it's generally cheaper to get them before hand, say a week or something. but sheffield to brum isn't that far anyway is it?

Def best to book them in advance, makes a clear difference. Use the trainline and get a young persons rail card, wether you get it for free or with a bank account it doesn't matter, it'll work out quickly.

Booking in advance might be cheaper, but to answer your question you can just turn up on the day and get one, especially for sheffield to brum for which there is a plethora of different trains.

There is two trains an hour between Sheffield and Birmingham - all operated by Virgin - all taking around an hour. Advance singles are cheaper - starting from £5 each way- on these you must chose a set train and book in advance. With a railcard a month return is £19.45 - go on any train after 9.30am and return within a month - buy on the day of travel (You must buy before you board a train). Overall for flexibility it would be worth travelling on normal tickets.
If you are going to be travelling a lot it is well worth investing in a Young persons railcard which cost £20 for the year and get you 33% off most train fares. See http://www.youngpersons-railcard.co.uk/ for a ton of info. |
